Proclaiming Christ as an active part of God’s family
through prayer, worship and caring

Sunday, 7th of November 2021 | Pentecost 24 | 10am, Holy Communion 1st order

As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.

 I Thessalonians 4:1

Prayer of the week

Blessed Lord, you have caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them, that by patience and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

* Father, as Melbourne continues to come out of lockdown please help the people of this city to be gentle with each other and themselves. For those who are fearful – to be allowed to take their time. For those who are angry – to learn to act in your wisdom. For those who lead – to govern with compassion the balance between freedoms and safety.

* Thank your God for the gift of marriage. We pray for couples to submit to each other out of reverence for Christ (Ephesians 5:21). Thank you Lord for the benefits of a single life and we pray for those who struggle with being single to know contentment in serving you.  (1 Corinthians 7:32-38).

Teaching notes:

1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 | Living to please God

Love, sex, work and death

We instructed you how to live to please God (1-2)

For it is God’s will that you should be sanctified (3-8)

– gain a wife (RSV) or control your own body (NIV)

– Marriage is for love not lust or abuse

So love each other (more and more). (9-10)

And make it your ambition to live a quiet life (11-12)

Love and sex. Work and ambition.

For further thought

Q: Christians can be accused of being prudish about sex but the Bible is boldly realistic. Sex is a wonderful gift of God but the greater the gift the more powerful is its abuse. What are the signs that sex is abused in our city today?

Q: Here we are taking verse 4 as referring to gaining a wife rather than gaining our bodies (see the footnote in NIV bibles). This means the sexual wrongs Paul refers to in verse 5 onwards are done within marriages. What are the differences between lust and love or, having sex and making love? Why are we vulnerable in our sexual relationships? Why does God judge sexual abuse even in marriage (4:7)?

Q: Some of the Thessalonians appear to have interpreted the teaching about Jesus coming again as a reason to give up work (2 Thessalonians 3:6-15). The cultural background to this is likely the greek idea that manual work should be for slaves. Yet, Paul tells them to work with their hands (5:11) and to support themselves. How is taking up work in this way an act of love for others (5:9,10)? How is it a witness to outsiders?

Q: In our city we say love is a reason for sexual freedom and ambition is a reason for a driven work life. Paul writes to the Thessalonians that love is a reason to seek God’s help in sexual self control and that our work life ambition should be to live quiet lives that gain the respect of people outside the church. How do Paul’s commands please God, care for ourselves and others and provide a witness to those outside the church?

In September our income was $6,071.89 and our expenses were $10,088.20. The deficit of $4,016.33 for the month was caused by lower than budget hall hire income due to Melbourne’s lockdown. Year to date income from all sources is 1% behind budget and expenses around 8% over budget. A full report will be available at our AGM
