1 Thessalonians 2:11-12

Prayer of the week

Almighty and everlasting God, give to us the increase of faith, hope and love; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us to love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  • Father, as Melbourne prepares to come out of lockdown please help the people of this city to be gentle with each other and themselves. For those who are fearful – to be allowed to take their time. For those who are angry – to learn to act in your wisdom. For those who lead – to govern well the balance between freedoms and safety.
  • As many prepare for a gradual return to their workplaces Father, we know work can be hard or risky and sometimes a source of enjoyment and right pride. Give all workers the integrity they need to act like your people on the job, for the prosperity of all.

For further thought

Q: The first two churches in Europe (Philippi and Thessalonica) were born in violent persecution. What persecutions do we face in our city for our commitment to Christ and his teaching? Are our churches united or divided by around Christ’s teachings? Why?

Q: Reading between the lines of this chapter we learn that Paul has to defend himself because he has been criticised. From verses 2-12, what kinds of criticism do you think been levelled at Paul and what is his response?

Q: Who do we feel a special affection and spiritual concern for? Why?

Q: Paul compares his ministry and care for the Thessalonians with a mother and a father. What are the ways each role calls for self-sacrifice or unselfishness? How does the emphasis in each role balance our approach to ministry in our church?

In September our income was $6,071.89 and our expenses were $10,088.20. The deficit of $4,016.33 for the month was caused by lower than budget hall hire income due to Melbourne’s lockdown. Year to date income from all sources is 1% behind budget and expenses around 8% over budget. A full report will be available at our AGM
