Sunday, 15th of August 2021 | Pentecost 12 | 10am, Holy Communion 3rd order

Verse: ‘Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about the happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.’
Luke 21:34-36

Set Prayers

For today: Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us both a sacrifice for sin and also an example of godly life: give us grace that we may always thankfully receive the benefits of his sacrifice, and also daily endeavour to follow the blessed steps of his most holy life; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Parish Council

Last Sunday Parish Council had a significant meeting with our Bishop, Genieve Blackwell. The heart of the meeting was that in September, Archbishop in Council (the Diocesan governance committee, elected from Synod members every three years) will place St. Edward’s on a list of parishes under consideration. This means St. Edward’s will be given an amount of time (yet to be specified) to work out how to take the parish forward in a healthy way into the future or how to work towards release of the parish resources and the care of our parishioners by other church bodies.

Once lockdown restrictions allow, the Parish Council will meet to work through the documents our Diocese has provided for this process. Parish Council will be inviting every member of St. Edward’s to join them in a conversation about this once they have clarified what the steps will be. In the meantime, we ask for your prayers as we work towards an outcome that honours God and enables the work of the gospel of Jesus Christ to flourish.

Craft group

St Edward’s is looking to start a day time craft group that is open to all. When restrictions permit, it will run in the foyer of the church on a weekly basis. It will include work in quilting, weaving, painting crafts knitting, crochet, card making and fellowship please. If you are interested in learning a craft, or have friends, family or neighbours who would like to join in then please contact Jenny here.

Small group

Our planned meeting to discuss a new day-time small group has been delayed by our current lockdown. If you are interested in joining such a group please contact Beth here.

Teaching

Luke 21: 5-38 | The end of time

Telescopes and time travel

The end of the world as we know it

Jesus gave us signs of the end

When? What will be the sign?

Be careful of your hearts

For further thought

Q: There have been many occasions in the recent past when Christian groups have made claims that the second coming of Jesus was imminent. From this passage, (Luke 21:36, see also, Matthew 24:35) how would you discuss this with someone who said that Jesus was coming back later this year?

Q: Are such people false prophets? (Luke 21:8)

Q: According to Jesus in Luke 21, what is the most beautiful wealth in the wealth filled temple? Why?

Q: The signs of the end include: deception (8), growing troubles amongst the nations of the world (9-11), persecution of the followers of Jesus (12-19), the fall of Jerusalem and the end of the sacrifices of the Old Covenant (20-24), signs on the earth and in the heavens (sky) (25,26), then the coming of the Son of Man (see Daniel 7). Jesus tells his followers to watch (29-31) – what signs have we seen of his coming? How does this help us to walk with him? How can we stop our hearts being weighed down by either distraction or anxiety (34-36).
